OYAP/ Evening Coop/Dual Credit

Looking to earn 2, 3, or even 4 high school credits while gaining valuable workplace experience?

If so, the Evening Cooperative Education program at the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario is perfect for you!

High School Students:

High school students can earn co-op credits for their SHSM and gain experience outside of the school day through the Ontario Cooperative Education program. This program provides hands-on experience in real-world work environments while earning credits towards your diploma. Students will develop valuable skills, knowledge, and habits that support their education and career planning. They must secure a safe placement where they can explore interests, apply classroom learning, and gain career insights. Parents can rest assured that their children will receive guidance and support from both teachers and placement supervisors, ensuring a meaningful and productive experience.

Adult Education:

Cooperative Education combines classroom learning with workplace experience, tailored to suit adult learners' strengths, interests, and needs, enhancing their future preparation. Earn credits by completing 110 hours of workplace experience with your current employer or a chosen placement. Receive pre-employment training and regular in-person or virtual support!

How to Register:

  • High School Students: Visit your guidance counsellor to register for night school co-op.
  • Adult Learners (18+ and not attending high school): Provide a copy of your transcript from your last attended school and proof of residency during registration.

Is Apprenticeship an Option?

An apprenticeship is a pathway and method of training that is hands-on. You learn on the job from people who know the job and get paid to learn your job. Most apprenticeships are between 3 to 5 years, requiring in-school training and completion of a provincial examination to receive their Certificate of Qualifications.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) provides a way for you to begin your apprenticeship training on the job while meeting high school diploma requirements through cooperative education.

OYAP is a specialized program that enables full-time students to explore careers in the skilled trades while earning valuable workplace experience in an occupation that requires apprenticeship as you work towards your Ontario Secondary School Diploma. You may be officially registered as an apprentice in your trade area (Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development) and begin your post-secondary apprenticeship training program at a partnering college or training delivery agent.

To be eligible for OYAP, applicants must:

  • be at least 16 years old;
  • have completed 16 credits towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) prior to starting the program;
  • be enrolled as a full-time student during the program through the CDSBEO School of Alternative and Continuing Education in a Cooperative Education program;
  • be working towards the completion of all OSSD requirements

Dual Credit Program

Dual credit programs are offered locally by Algonquin College and St. Lawrence College in partnership with the six Eastern Ontario school boards. A dual credit program provides secondary school students with the opportunity to take college/apprenticeship level courses at a post-secondary school, and the credits earned will count towards both the student’s OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) as well as their post-secondary diploma, apprenticeship, or certification.

Dual credit programs allow high school students to ‘try out’ or sample college/apprenticeship programs at no cost.  As well, dual credit students gain experience in a college environment and, as a result, can often transition into a college program with greater ease.

For more information, please contact your high school guidance department or adult learners are encouraged to email [email protected] to set up a meeting to discuss options.
